Governor DeWine believes that the new law, in addition to the Ohio's Stand Your Ground Law which became effective in 2021, will help Ohio families defend themselves when using deadly force under specific circumstances.

How the Concealed Carry Law Changes in Ohio!  What You Need to Know!

The new Ohio permit-less carry law makes a number of changes to the concealed carry law, including the following:

1. Age for Concealed Carry Does Not Change - you must be 21 years of age or older to conceal carry.
2. Qualified Adults Only - does not change, a person cannot be prohibited by law from possessing a firearm. (i.e. charged or convicted of a felony).
3. CCW Permit is Optional - Ohio will still offer a CCW permit to anyone who wants it, but it won’t be mandatory.  CCW permit licensing requires safety training, examination, and a background check.  All of this is now optional.
4. Law Applies to Handguns Only - the concealed carry laws will apply to handguns only.  It does not apply to long guns.
5. No Residency Requirements - anyone who is in Ohio, resident or not, will be allowed to conceal carry without a permit.
6. Out of State Laws Still Apply - Ohio concealed carry laws do not apply in other states.  Residents crossing state lines must obey firearms laws of that state.
7. No Changes to Private Property - concealed carry on private property will be at the discretion of the property owner.
8. Federal Laws Require Permits at School Zones - federal laws till require persons to carry a concealed carry permits in school zones.  
9. No Requirement to Promptly Inform Law Enforcement - Ohio will no longer require person that conceal carry a handgun to promptly inform a law enforcement officer about the gun when stopped.  You will only be required to inform the officer about the gun if asked!
