What is a Holster Wedge? How it Can Reduce Printing

Example of a holster wedge

Lets take an in-depth look at a holster Wedge attachment and learn about how it can help you better conceal carry your gun.

Learn about what a holster Wedge is?  How it works? And, how to install it on your holster.

Quality Holster is one of the most essential everyday carry EDC items for many people.  It conceals the most important tool for self-defense, our firearms.

What is Holster Wedge?

Holster Wedge

Holster wedge is a padding attachment (typically foam) that can be mounted on the back of your inside waistband IWB holster, which pushes the holster into your body for better concealment by reducing printing.

How Does it Work?

Unlike the holster Claw, the wedge is installed on the back of your holster.

However, Holster Wedge and the Claw actually serve the same purpose to reduce printing by pushing the grip end of your gun into your body.

But, they can actually work in conjunction with to reduce printing.

Holster wedge pushes on your lower abdomen, which in turn pushes the top part of your holster and grip end of your gun into your upper abdomen (closer to your body).

This reduces printing on your clothing and helps better conceal your weapon.

This will also increase your comfort levers since the rigged part of the holster is not digging into your body.

When to Use the Holster Wedge?

The Wedge will not benefit everyone, but it's a good solution for the problem we have with larger handguns, which is printing!

It's more ideal for larger guns since the grip end sticks out further away from the body and causes more printing on your clothing.

This reduces your weapons concealment.

It's typically ideal for while you are concealing larger handguns such as the Glock 19.

If you have sub or micro-compact handguns, the wedge will have little to no effect.

Also consider that on a larger handgun, we typically need to lower our ride height for better concealment, since the gun grip is larger it sticks out further away from your body causing more printing.

When we lower our ride height with larger handguns, this typically reduces printing, but will also reduce our comfort levels.

This is more predominant when you Appendix Carry inside of waistband AIWB

But, with a Wedge we can reduce printing without lowering our Ride Height, which can in turn increase our comfort levels.

Are All Holsters Compatible with a Wedge?

Short answer is no!  Not all holsters are designed to support the wedge.

Types of Holster Wedges

Mounted Wedges are typically attached to your holster using screws. However, this makes them less compatible with many holsters since they need to be designed for a specific ones.

Example of a mounted wedge is a Raven Concealment RCS wedge as seen in the below image.

Sticky Wedges are typically attached to your holster with a sticky adhesive. This method allows the wedge to be used on almost any holster, but an adhesive can eventually loose it's stickiness.

Example of a sticky wedge is a Tier 1 Wedge as seen in the below image.

Final Thoughts

Holster wedge is a great addition to your IWB holster.

Like the holster Claw it helps reduce printing on your clothing, which can help you better conceal your weapon.

Furthermore, the soft wedge patting can improve your comfort levers by reducing digging into your body by the rigged part of your holster, which is replaced by the soft padding.
